This Polychrome Indian Sculpture of a Sacred Peacock is in Excellent Condition, c.early 18th century. This hand carved wood sculpture holds significant meaning in Hindu religious practice. It was originally placed inside a temple in India. The peacock, besides being the national bird of India, is known as the mount of the Lord of War, Subramanya (also known as Skanda), the son of Shiva and his consort Parvati. Riding a peacock signifies that Subramanya conquered pride, egoism, and vanity. The cobra at the feet of the peacock symbolizes fearlessness and immortality. Subramanya is credited with vanquishing the demon Taraka. This triumph is celebrated every November on Skanda Sashti. Measuring 27” D x 54” W x 67” H.
