This Charming Oil on Canvas, Jeux de Chatons signed Max Carlier is in Excellent Condition. Max Carlier is one of the great still life masters of Belgium. Born in Tourcoing, Belgium in 1872, Carlier was a painter of the Belgian School who most typically executed still lifes of florals and fruits. He also painted genre scenes and interiors from time to time. He lived and worked primarily in Brussels, but traveled extensively throughout Europe, especially Italy. Carlier lived and worked in Brittany for a short period of time as well. Working with a warm palette, Carlier's still lifes are painted in the Neo-Dutch tradition. This tradition took on force towards the end of the 18th century with artists such as Gérard van Spaendonck, Jan van Huysum and Rachel Roysch. The finely executed still lifes gained an unwavering popularity throughout Europe during the 19th century. As with these great leaders in still life painting, Carlier demonstrates an analytical approach, opulent compositions, unerring eye for refined detail, unparalleled craftsmanship and a high finish. In this charming painting of three kittens playing with a ball on a string and lapping milk from a teacup, Carlier has exhibited his precise detail and warm palette for which he is known. Framed size is 31 x 34", canvas is 20 1/2 X 24 1/2", please view all pictures to enjoy, serious inquiries are welcome! Shipping and insurance are determined after checkout. (Item ID:B561004612)

$140,000 USD

This Rare and Exceptional Baroque period Northern Italian Walnut Sculpture of Putti Harvesting Grapes is in Excellent Condition, c. 18th century. The iconography of putti harvesting grapes is unique in its historical evolution. Putti and grapes have ancient value as symbols of the god of wine, Dionysus (Bacchus). Early Christians adapted the theme as a representation of the Eucharist. This is one of the very few instances of Christianity assimilating a pagan visual symbol. The most notable example of the early use of putti harvesting grapes in Christian iconography is in Santa Costanza in Rome. Putti again became extremely popular decorative devices in the Baroque period. This sculpture is an exceptional example of the theme, having 16 individualized disporting putti entangled in grape vines emerging from a foliate carved base featuring a life sized conch shell. The sculpture is raised on an octagonal pedestal carved with additional Baroque styled devices. This piece was specifically commissioned by an important Italian family originally residing in San Pellegrino Terme (Province of Bergamo, Region of Lombardia) and later relocated to a village near Guardia Sanframondi (Province of Benevento, Region of Campania). The top putto was positioned to appear to be supporting the entry hall ceiling of the family palazzo. Measuring 39 ½” diameter base x 127” H it is Incredible for the most Elite of Continental Designs. Please view and zoom all pictures, serious inquiries are welcome! (Item #H2466945)

This Wonderful Oil on Canvas, "Through the Door", Raffandre is in Excellent Condition. Measuring 31 1/4 X 31 1/4" it is unframed. Raffandre was born in the Venetian winterland in 1945. His father, who was French, had a great influence on Raffandre in the arts. Consequently, he attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Venice with his father's encouragement. In this renowned city of art, where artists flock from all over the world, Raffandre came into contact with famous masters, under whose direction he embarked upon a severe artistic apprenticeship. His particular aptitude for painting allowed him to learn over a fairly brief period of time, the techniques of drawing and of painting in watercolor before progressing definitively to oil painting. He later moved to Paris, where he was able to study the works of the Impressionists. He greatly admired this genre because he felt in touch with his volatile character, which was defined by his love of sun inspired colors. Raffandre was able to stay in Paris for several years, which had a significant influence on his painting and technique. Raffandre's paintings received wonderful acclaim and were critiqued "…the foregrounds stand out softly from the backgrounds when observing one of Raffandre's paintings. The importance of color, studied and used in all its vast chromatic range, is clearly his main priority." Upon return to his native Italy, the combination of French and Italian styles made his paintings a unique and valuable contribution to the art world. $20,000 USD

This Serene Oil on Canvas, "Côte rocheuse près de la mer" signed Charles Swyncop, dated 1923 is in Excellent Condition. Charles Swyncop was the student of his brother, painter Philippe Swyncop and first studied at the Académie des Beaux-Arts in Brussels. He won the third Prix de Rome in 1920 in painting where he furthered his studies of iconography, practices in perspective and studied the traditions of the Great Masters. Swyncop painted with subtle, large strokes distinguishing his style from his brother's. He also traveled to Italy and Spain from 1922 to 1923 where he painted beautiful portraits of the local people. Swyncop debuted in Brussels at the Cercle artistique et littéraire in 1924. Swyncop also collaborated with fellow Belgian painter, Alfred Bastien, in 1921 and 1937 on a number of works. He was commissioned to paint decorative panels for the Ministry of the Colonies at the Universal Exposition in Antwerp. Swyncop visited Spain several times throughout his career where he painted landscapes, figures, seascapes and still lifes. He was professor at the Académie d'Ixelles from 1938 until his death in 1970. Swyncop most probably painted this exquisite seascape on one of his voyages to the Spanish Mediterranean. The deep blues, aqua, and turquoise of the sea are reminiscent of the renderings of the French Mediterranean that Matisse and Derain painted at the same time in France. Trees line the rocky coast and the sea seems to blend into the expansive sky in the distance. In this painting, Swyncop used a broad brushstroke, especially visible in his renderings of the trees, also very similar to the French Fauve painters. Measuring Framed size is 28 3/4 x 36 1/2 inches, canvas alone, 23 3/4 X 31 12/ inches. Please view and zoom all pictures to enjoy, serious inquiries are welcome! (Item #B5601037128)
