This Oil on Board, "Le Chene", Pierre Gaston Rigaud is in Excellent Condition, c1935. Framed size is 25 3/4 x 28 3/4 inches., 15" X 18" unframed. Pierre Gaston Rigaud was born April 4, 1874 in Bordeaux. He was a well-regarded Post-Impressionist plein-air painter, best known for his marine scenes, landscapes and church interiors. Rigaud began his artistic training with artists Bonnat and Albert Maignan. He later moved to Paris where he shared a studio in Montmartre with Henri Toulouse-Lautrec. He found himself enveloped by the vibrancy of the avant-garde art movement at the turn of the century in Paris.
Rigaud became a member of the Society des Artistes Francais in 1906, after which time he became a visible and regular figure in the Salon exhibitions. Beginning in 1907, he started exhibiting at the Salon des Independants, followed by the Salon d'Automne and the Salon des Tuileries. He was invited to participate in a National Exhibition with the Salon d' Automne at the Tuileries, where he was awarded a Silver medal in 1920 and a Gold medal in 1923.
Rigaud sold very few paintings during his lifetime because he remained dedicated to the truth of nature, style and subject. He held on to his purest convictions of the plein air style until his death. He had ample opportunity to capture the beauty of nature en plein air at his home in Corsia, where many of his paintings were executed. Rigaud's work embodied a robust and mystical view of nature, as seen in the prominent, almost life-like trees and enchanting colors in "Le Chene". Following in the footsteps of the Impressionist masters Monet and Sisley before him, Rigaud relished in capturing the fleeting yet dramatic effects of light on the striking terrain of Southern France. Riguad continued to be inspired by the power of art and nature until his death in 1949. Exhibitions: 1906 Societé des Artists Francais 1920 Silver Medal, 1923 Gold Medal 1909 Galerie Georges Petit, 1925 Galerie Charpentier. Museums: Musee Carnavalet, Paris Le Luxembourg, Paris, Musee La Tour Du Pin Musee de Limoges, Musee de Bourdeaux Musee de Mulhouse. Please view and zoom closely, serious inquiries are welcome!

This Rare and Exceptional Baroque period Northern Italian Walnut Sculpture of Putti Harvesting Grapes is in Excellent Condition, c. 18th century. The iconography of putti harvesting grapes is unique in its historical evolution. Putti and grapes have ancient value as symbols of the god of wine, Dionysus (Bacchus). Early Christians adapted the theme as a representation of the Eucharist. This is one of the very few instances of Christianity assimilating a pagan visual symbol. The most notable example of the early use of putti harvesting grapes in Christian iconography is in Santa Costanza in Rome. Putti again became extremely popular decorative devices in the Baroque period. This sculpture is an exceptional example of the theme, having 16 individualized disporting putti entangled in grape vines emerging from a foliate carved base featuring a life sized conch shell. The sculpture is raised on an octagonal pedestal carved with additional Baroque styled devices. This piece was specifically commissioned by an important Italian family originally residing in San Pellegrino Terme (Province of Bergamo, Region of Lombardia) and later relocated to a village near Guardia Sanframondi (Province of Benevento, Region of Campania). The top putto was positioned to appear to be supporting the entry hall ceiling of the family palazzo. Measuring 39 ˝” diameter base x 127” H it is Incredible for the most Elite of Continental Designs. Please view and zoom all pictures, serious inquiries are welcome!

This English School Oil on Canvas, “Girl with a Dog” is in Excellent Condition,c1750. Featuring a sweet portrait of a young girl affectionately petting her adoring dog. Dogs carry rich symbolic meaning in the history of art, most commonly used to represent fidelity. This portrait is an interesting document of the changing societal structure in 18th century England. As the middle classes began to grow and the new bourgeois class began to covet the trappings of the aristocracy, portraits became a popular expression of newly accumulated wealth and prestige. The inclusion in this portrait of a dog also has allusions to social status, as family pets with no practical function other than amusement were considered an expression of luxury and affluence. The young girl is dressed in a simple but elegant frock trimmed in lace, another clue to the affluence and social status of this young child’s family. However, the simplicity of the dress, with little ornament indicates that she and her family were a part of the new bourgeois, rather than the aristocracy. Measuring 1/2” D x 20” W x 25” H it is unframed. Please view and zoom closely, serious inquiries are welcome!
