This Fabulous Oil on Canvas, "Place de la Madeleine", Edouard-Leon Cortes is in Excellent Condition. Framed size is 35 x 29 inches, Canvas Alone 25 1/2 X 19 1/2 inches. oil on canvas , 25 1/2 X 19 1/2 inches , Cortès was born in Lagny, France on April 26, 1882. During his early lifetime, Paris was the center of the art world. Artists from across the globe traveled there to study and paint its beautiful countryside and cities. Views of Paris, 'the City of Lights', were in great demand by both collectors and tourists. Édouard Cortès, along with other artists such as: Eugene Galien-Laloue (1854-1941), Luigi Loir (1845-1916) and Jean Beraud (1849-1936) answered their demand. Specializing in Paris street scenes, each of these artists captured the city during its heyday and continued with these scenes well into the 20th century. In 1899, at the age of 16, Cortes exhibited his first work at the Société des Artistes Français entitled La Labour. The work was well received by critics and the public - helping establish Édouard's favorable reputation in Paris. It was at the turn of the century, c.1900, when he began to paint the scenes of which he was most famous for - Paris' streets and monuments. Cortes was one of the more prolific artists of his time. His views of Paris are among the most telling and beautiful images of this genre; capturing the city during all its seasons for more than 60 years. Cortes was an active member of the Union des Beaux-Arts de Lagny and was the Union's first president. Their inaugural exhibition was held in 1927 and Cortès continued to exhibit there until the late 1930's. During this period, he received many awards, gained great notoriety and was a frequent exhibitor at the exhibition halls in Paris, including the Salon d'Automne, Salon d'Hiver, Salon de la Société Nationale de l'Horticulture and Salon des Indépendants. His beautiful depictions of Paris were always in demand and he continued to paint them until his death in 1969. In this painting, we see the Place da la Madeline portrayed in the background. After 1815, the restored Bourbon monarchy confirmed the building should become a church, dedicated to Mary Magdalene as an apology to God for the deaths of Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette. These efforts were stalled and in 1837 the building was briefly considered for use as Paris's first railway terminal. The "Madeleine" was finally consecrated in 1842 during the reign of Louis-Philippe. The building showcases imposing bronze doors created by sculptor Triqueti depicting the theme of "The Ten Commandments". "The Last Judgment" on the south pediment is by Lemaire. Beneath a headless statue of St. Luke on the north side of the church, an inscription reads "On May 30, 1948, a German shell struck the church of the Madeleine and decapitated this statue." "Place de la Madeleine" exemplifies the romance of the bustling Paris city streets captured at twilight. Wet streets littered with freshly fallen leaves glisten from a late autumn rain and reflect the lights from the street cars and surrounding city buildings. The avenue is crowded with many Parisians as they stroll the sidewalks - perhaps going to dinner, a show or exhibition. An inviting glow from the buildings and street cars are highlighted against the deep purple and darkening streets of approaching night. The street scene contrasts against a brilliant turquoise sky. This painting is typical of the types of "City of Light" scenes of which Cortes was so famous. This painting is illustrated in the book Edouard Cortes by David Klein on page 132. This Oil on Canvas, "Vallee de la Seine", Raymond Thibesart is in Excellent Condition. Son of an affluent family, Raymond Thibesart was born in Troyes, France on May 2, 1874. Soon after, the Thibesart's moved to the small town of Enghien outside of Paris. It was here that Raymond first began to study art with Venezuelan Impressionist master Emile Boggio at the age of eleven. He later began his formal art education at the Lycée Rollin in Paris. He entered the l'Ecole des Beaux-Arts in 1894, followed by the Acadèmie Julian in Paris where his teachers Jules Lefevre and Tony Robert Fleury introduced him to the Symbolist Movement which heavily influenced the early part of his career. At the turn of the century, Thibesart spent much time in Southern France and Italy painting with Boggio and Henri Martin. From this time on, Thibesart worked in the Post-Impressionist style. He often traveled to Italy, Switzerland, Belgium and Corsica to record the landscape. With great enthusiasm and energy, he used pastels to sketch the light, the passage of the wind, the flowering trees, the mornings of white frost or snow, the agricultural work, and the aura of these lands. In the tranquility of his workshop, these colored chalk drawings allowed him to execute oil paintings that retained the spontaneity and beauty of his subjects. Thibesart exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français in Paris where he was a Silver Medalist in 1922; at the Salon des Indépendants; and at the Salon d'Automne. He was a member of the Societé des Artistes Francais from 1897, Member Salon des Indépendents since 1905, and a member of the Salon d'Automne, Paris. His work is found in the following public and private collections: the Salon des Artistes Français, the Contempory Art Gallery, Paris, Gallery Georges Petit, Paris, the Galerie des Champs-Elysees, Paris, the National Museum of Caracus, France, and the Museum of Fine Arts, Troyes, France. This Oil on Board, "Le Chene", Pierre Gaston Rigaud is in Excellent Condition, c1935. Framed size is 25 3/4 x 28 3/4 inches., 15" X 18" unframed. Pierre Gaston Rigaud was born April 4, 1874 in Bordeaux. He was a well-regarded Post-Impressionist plein-air painter, best known for his marine scenes, landscapes and church interiors. Rigaud began his artistic training with artists Bonnat and Albert Maignan. He later moved to Paris where he shared a studio in Montmartre with Henri Toulouse-Lautrec. He found himself enveloped by the vibrancy of the avant-garde art movement at the turn of the century in Paris. Rigaud became a member of the Society des Artistes Francais in 1906, after which time he became a visible and regular figure in the Salon exhibitions. Beginning in 1907, he started exhibiting at the Salon des Independants, followed by the Salon d'Automne and the Salon des Tuileries. He was invited to participate in a National Exhibition with the Salon d' Automne at the Tuileries, where he was awarded a Silver medal in 1920 and a Gold medal in 1923. Rigaud sold very few paintings during his lifetime because he remained dedicated to the truth of nature, style and subject. He held on to his purest convictions of the plein air style until his death. He had ample opportunity to capture the beauty of nature en plein air at his home in Corsia, where many of his paintings were executed. Rigaud's work embodied a robust and mystical view of nature, as seen in the prominent, almost life-like trees and enchanting colors in "Le Chene". Following in the footsteps of the Impressionist masters Monet and Sisley before him, Rigaud relished in capturing the fleeting yet dramatic effects of light on the striking terrain of Southern France. Riguad continued to be inspired by the power of art and nature until his death in 1949. Exhibitions: 1906 Societé des Artists Francais 1920 Silver Medal, 1923 Gold Medal 1909 Galerie Georges Petit, 1925 Galerie Charpentier. This Charming Oil on Canvas, Jeux de Chatons signed Max Carlier is in Excellent Condition. Max Carlier is one of the great still life masters of Belgium. Born in Tourcoing, Belgium in 1872, Carlier was a painter of the Belgian School who most typically executed still lifes of florals and fruits. He also painted genre scenes and interiors from time to time. He lived and worked primarily in Brussels, but traveled extensively throughout Europe, especially Italy. Carlier lived and worked in Brittany for a short period of time as well. Working with a warm palette, Carlier's still lifes are painted in the Neo-Dutch tradition. This tradition took on force towards the end of the 18th century with artists such as Gérard van Spaendonck, Jan van Huysum and Rachel Roysch. The finely executed still lifes gained an unwavering popularity throughout Europe during the 19th century. As with these great leaders in still life painting, Carlier demonstrates an analytical approach, opulent compositions, unerring eye for refined detail, unparalleled craftsmanship and a high finish. In this charming painting of three kittens playing with a ball on a string and lapping milk from a teacup, Carlier has exhibited his precise detail and warm palette for which he is known. This Wonderful Oil on Canvas, "Through the Door", Raffandre is in Excellent Condition. Measuring 31 1/4 X 31 1/4" it is unframed. Raffandre was born in the Venetian winterland in 1945. His father, who was French, had a great influence on Raffandre in the arts. Consequently, he attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Venice with his father's encouragement. In this renowned city of art, where artists flock from all over the world, Raffandre came into contact with famous masters, under whose direction he embarked upon a severe artistic apprenticeship. His particular aptitude for painting allowed him to learn over a fairly brief period of time, the techniques of drawing and of painting in watercolor before progressing definitively to oil painting. He later moved to Paris, where he was able to study the works of the Impressionists. He greatly admired this genre because he felt in touch with his volatile character, which was defined by his love of sun inspired colors. Raffandre was able to stay in Paris for several years, which had a significant influence on his painting and technique. Raffandre's paintings received wonderful acclaim and were critiqued "…the foregrounds stand out softly from the backgrounds when observing one of Raffandre's paintings. The importance of color, studied and used in all its vast chromatic range, is clearly his main priority." Upon return to his native Italy, the combination of French and Italian styles made his paintings a unique and valuable contribution to the art world.
