The faces are carved and painted, the larger figure has painted glass eyes. The torsos are solid, with movable joints at the shoulders and the elbows. This Rare Flemish Life-size Angel in Carved Limewood is in Excellent Condtion,c c. 1740. Northern Flemish artists are well known for their mastery of wood sculpture, and this figure follows that tradition. Naturalistically articulated draperies are arranged around the body, and the musculature of the arms and legs is shaped by the play of light and shadow across the surface of each sculpted plane. The face expresses ecclesiastical ecstasy and wonder. This angel was originally part of the decorative program of an altarpiece in a private chapel in Mechelen, Belgium. Similar examples of angels in Flemish decorative programs can be seen at Saint Nicholas’s Church in Ghent. Measuring 33 1/2” D x 38” W x 54” H. This Rare and Exceptional Baroque period Northern Italian Walnut Sculpture of Putti Harvesting Grapes is in Excellent Condition, c. 18th century. The iconography of putti harvesting grapes is unique in its historical evolution. Putti and grapes have ancient value as symbols of the god of wine, Dionysus (Bacchus). Early Christians adapted the theme as a representation of the Eucharist. This is one of the very few instances of Christianity assimilating a pagan visual symbol. The most notable example of the early use of putti harvesting grapes in Christian iconography is in Santa Costanza in Rome. Putti again became extremely popular decorative devices in the Baroque period. This sculpture is an exceptional example of the theme, having 16 individualized disporting putti entangled in grape vines emerging from a foliate carved base featuring a life sized conch shell. The sculpture is raised on an octagonal pedestal carved with additional Baroque styled devices. This piece was specifically commissioned by an important Italian family originally residing in San Pellegrino Terme (Province of Bergamo, Region of Lombardia) and later relocated to a village near Guardia Sanframondi (Province of Benevento, Region of Campania). The top putto was positioned to appear to be supporting the entry hall ceiling of the family palazzo. Measuring 39 ½” diameter base x 127” H it is Incredible for the most Elite of Continental Designs. Please view and zoom all pictures, serious inquiries are welcome!
