| This Serene Oil on Canvas, "Côte rocheuse près de la mer" signed Charles Swyncop, dated 1923 is in Excellent Condition. Charles Swyncop was the student of his brother, painter Philippe Swyncop and first studied at the Académie des Beaux-Arts in Brussels. He won the third Prix de Rome in 1920 in painting where he furthered his studies of iconography, practices in perspective and studied the traditions of the Great Masters. Swyncop painted with subtle, large strokes distinguishing his style from his brother's. He also traveled to Italy and Spain from 1922 to 1923 where he painted beautiful portraits of the local people. Swyncop debuted in Brussels at the Cercle artistique et littéraire in 1924. Swyncop also collaborated with fellow Belgian painter, Alfred Bastien, in 1921 and 1937 on a number of works. He was commissioned to paint decorative panels for the Ministry of the Colonies at the Universal Exposition in Antwerp. Swyncop visited Spain several times throughout his career where he painted landscapes, figures, seascapes and still lifes. He was professor at the Académie d'Ixelles from 1938 until his death in 1970. Swyncop most probably painted this exquisite seascape on one of his voyages to the Spanish Mediterranean. The deep blues, aqua, and turquoise of the sea are reminiscent of the renderings of the French Mediterranean that Matisse and Derain painted at the same time in France. Trees line the rocky coast and the sea seems to blend into the expansive sky in the distance. In this painting, Swyncop used a broad brushstroke, especially visible in his renderings of the trees, also very similar to the French Fauve painters. Measuring Framed size is 28 3/4 x 36 1/2 inches, canvas alone, 23 3/4 X 31 12/ inches. Please view and zoom all pictures to enjoy, serious inquiries are welcome! (Item #B5601037128) | ||||||||||||
