| This Rare Flemish Life-size Angel in Carved Limewood is in Excellent Condtion,c c. 1740. Northern Flemish artists are well known for their mastery of wood sculpture, and this figure follows that tradition. Naturalistically articulated draperies are arranged around the body, and the musculature of the arms and legs is shaped by the play of light and shadow across the surface of each sculpted plane. The face expresses ecclesiastical ecstasy and wonder. This angel was originally part of the decorative program of an altarpiece in a private chapel in Mechelen, Belgium. Similar examples of angels in Flemish decorative programs can be seen at Saint Nicholas’s Church in Ghent. Measuring 33 1/2” D x 38” W x 54” H.
